The launch of its new feature “Threads” was officially announced by Robby Stein, Instagram’s Director of Product in a blog post. According to Robby, ‘Threads’ is a new way to message close friends in a dedicated, private space.

Robby further explained what the new feature does in his blog saying, “Threads is a standalone app designed with a privacy, speed, and your close connections in mind. You can share photos, videos, messages, Stories, and more with your Instagram close friends list. You are in control of who can reach you on Threads, and you can customize the experience around the people who matter most.”

Threads is a separate camera-first messaging app that has three major components: Message Only Your Close Friends, Share Photos and Videos Instantly and Find Out What Friends are up to with Status. Instagram also created “Status” feature, a feature where a user can choose what status they want to get notifications from.

“Threads offer a new, dedicated home for your favorite conversations,” said Robby in addition to what Threads can do. “Messages from your close friends list will appear in both Threads and Direct, so you have full control over and with whom you want to interact.”

Robby also announced that ‘Threads’ started rolling out today.
