Airbnb to tie up with Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority

On Thursday, Airbnb and Sri Lanka Tourism Development signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Airbnb, a global hospitality services provider, is in partnership with Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) in providing the “Airbnb Experience” platform, which lets tourist experience both local and traditional experiences.

During the signing of MoU, Amanpreet Bajaj, the Airbnb’s Country Manager, stated that there are 40 “Airbnb Experiences” in Sri Lanka that travelers can choose from.

In 2016, the “Airbnb Experiences” was launched in 12 cities all over the globe, having 500 experiences. But now, the platform already expanded to over 800 cities and 15,000 experiences. Bajaj added that they are planning to expand the platform in thousands more this year.

According to Bajaj, the Sri Lankan Airbnb host offers a broad range of experiences. This includes walks in Sri Lanka’s national parks, heritage trail in Galle, surfing in Marissa, and explore food spots in Colombo.

Kavan Ratnayake, Chairman of SLDTA, said that they are excited in the said partnership in promoting such experiences in Sri Lanka.  Ratnayake also thinks that the partnership will promote Sri Lankan Tourism.

Ratnayake said that Sri Lanka is not interested in the mass market, what they prefer was to let travelers experience what Sri Lanka is yet to offer.

Thao Nguyen, Airbnb’s APAC Head of Strategic Partnerships, said that Airbnb is also excited in working with the Sri Lankan government in the promotion of tourism – both local and traditional.

The partnership is not only for travelers but also for the benefit of Sri Lankan people.
