Elon Musk made news by announcing that he had released all the electric car maker’s patents as an effort to fight climate change.
Musk once promised in a blog post that the company will not initiate any patent lawsuits against anyone who wants to use their technology for the greater good.
Musk stated that Tesla Motors was created to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport. He emphasized that if we clear a path to the creation of compelling electric vehicles, but then lay intellectual property landmines behind to inhibit others, they are acting in a manner contrary to that goal.
Musk assumed that it would be difficult to address the carbon crisis if the production of electric cars weren’t that fast enough. By releasing the patents, other smaller companies can benefit from their technology and compete against the gasoline powered cars.
Musk asserts that the real competition will not be the non-Tesla companies manufacturing electric cars, but the gasoline powered cars. This open-source philosophy will strengthen Tesla’s position and will attract talented engineers.
Musk was doubtful of their patents as it only helped corporate giants and lawyers rather than inventors. He felt driven to file patents for Tesla to prevent rival car manufacturers from stealing their technology.
Musk strongly believes that the real reason to create electric cars was to fight climate change, and patenting is parallel to hypocrisy.
