Tech Update: Facebook Merges Instagram and Messenger Chats

Facebook plans to unify the messaging platforms of its popular apps to allow cross-messaging among Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

Reportedly iOS and Android Instagram users in the U.S are receiving an update that they can message their friends on Facebook through the Instagram app even if they don’t have an Instagram account.

The update screen popped up in Instagram’s mobile app with the message ‘There’s a New Way to Message on Instagram’ with a list of features including “new color look for your chats,” more emoji reactions, swipe-to-reply, and “chats with friends who use Facebook.”

Once updated, the regular DM icon in the top right of Instagram is replaced by the Facebook Messenger logo. Chat on Instagram is more colorful than before, with the sender’s messages shifting between blue and purple as the user scrolls. However, it’s still not possible to message Facebook users from Instagram.

Instagram says that merging with Facebook Messenger is optional for now and users can decline. However, as noted by The Verge, the update doesn’t yet offer Messenger conversation even if the users updated their accounts, which is likely to be enabled in the next few days.

If everything goes right, the next step is to combine the two services with WhatsApp.
